I have over a million United frequent flyer miles, and they are almost worthless. When miles are earned from credit card purchases rather than flights, United gives you very low status. I have found it is virtually impossible to purchase a ticket with miles, and even buying coach and upgrading to business with miles has become “iffy.” Last year, I has a round trip from Los Angeles to London that I booked 6 months in advance and requested an upgrade to business. The return flight was never upgraded, even though they were upgrading more preferred customers at the gate while I was waiting to leave. United miles used to be great, but no longer.

the idea that award travel isnt worth it now because flights are cheap is a joke. award travel is also being discounted – and contrary to the norm, is wide open. you can fly a family of 4 in business class on some of the few remaining international routes for LESS than the published award levels on american right now. Thats probably happend precisely zero times before the corona virus. with good deals on international business starting at maybe $3k a ticket, and average prices more like $5 or 6k, you could easily extract 25 thousand dollars in value flying a family – if you have deep enough ff reserves.

Sorry I was mistaken – the author actually suggests getting a credit card as an answer to FOUR of of four contrived ‘problems’, not 3 of 4. Ridiculous. Jonny, if this is the way your site is going you will lose your value to readers

Perhaps getting kickbacks from credit card companies as 3 of 4 “solutions” to contrived ‘problems’ advise getting a credit card with miles. What a joke. that is good for the first year. Then what? I am perfectly happy with my Copa/star alliance miles.
